Fourteen persons are now homeless following a fire that ravaged four ranged-houses in the West Ruimveldt housing scheme. Guyana Standard understands that the fire began around noon and quickly spread to the joined houses.
On the scene, Divisional Officer of Operations, Clive McDonald said the fire service was contacted just before noon, and fire trucks from three stations were sent to the scene to battle the blaze. The first set of fire fighters were summoned from the West Ruimveldt fire station, which is in proximity to where the fire occurred.
McDonald could not say preliminarily what was the cause of the fire or which house the fire started. “I cannot say at this point because our men are still inside trying to calm the blaze. An investigation will follow after,” McDonald said.
He further told the media that there were no reports of injuries or death upon the arrival of the fire service. “This is one of the first things we look at when we arrive at the scene of fires… In this case, everyone seems accounted for,” McDonald said.
Residents in the area claimed that the fire service team was slothful in not only its preparedness to respond but their arrival too. However, McDonald rubbished those claims. He said, “As soon as we received the call our team was dispatched.”
