Police in Regional Division One are investigating the alleged murder of 24-year-old labourer, Joel Ramitt, which occurred last Friday night in Region One. According to reports, the suspect, a 44-year-old pork-knocker from Anns Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) has been arrested.
A team of police officers visited the scene at an apartment complex in Port Kaituma Water Front on Saturday, where they learnt that the victim had booked a room and was “operating” there.
On the night of the incident, the pork-knocker, whom police have not named, secured his room and left. Later that night, a 28-year-old man saw Ramitt jumping out of the suspect’s room window with a haversack on his back. The man held onto Ramitt and took him, along with the haversack, to the pork-knocker.
He checked the haversack and realized it was his before pulling out a knife and stabbing Ramitt in the abdomen. The victim ran to the Port Kaituma Police Station to report the incident. Upon arrival, the police found that the victim’s intestines were protruding from his body. He was immediately rushed to Port Kaituma Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.
Early on Saturday morning, the police visited the scene and arrested the suspect, who was cautioned and taken into custody at Port Kaituma Police Station. A search of his room revealed a black-handled knife with a red substance that appeared to be blood on it. The scene was photographed for evidence, and investigations are ongoing.
Ramitt passed away at around 08:00hrs on Saturday. His body has been escorted to the Port Kaituma Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
