Convicted drug felon, Barry Dataram, is trying to strike a deal with US authorities before he is processed for court on a number of drug charges. Dataram is still being held in the United States after being arrested by DEA agents earlier this year.
Back in February, Dataram was arraigned before the courts in the US accused of knowingly conspiring with others to traffic over 300lbs of cocaine into the US between 2001 and 2003.
Dataram was held by US immigration officials two weeks ago after arriving at the John F. Kennedy International Airport. The convicted drug mule left Guyana, two years after he was released from prison.
Guyana Standard understands that Dataram was held for questioning in relation to a number of drug trafficking crimes that were committed in the US.
Dataram, two years ago, completed his three-year jail sentence in Guyana. The self-confessed drug lord, and his reputed wife, were apprehended by the Surinamese authorities back in 2017, after attempting to flee Guyana.
Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Dataram for possession of ammunition without licence, and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking back in 2016.
In 2009, the US issued an extradition request for Dataram. He had moved to the courts seeking to block his extradition. Sometime last year, Dataram reportedly sought to have his US passport renewed as he is a US citizen. He was successful in this effort and booked a flight to the US.
