President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that Sky Cana, an airline based in the Dominican Republic will be commencing services in Guyana from June 1, 2023.

The announcement was made via his Facebook page, following a meeting with the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Frank Diaz Gonzalez and other key government officials such as the Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh; Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill; and the Director of Presidential Affairs, Marcia Nadir-Sharma.

The President noted that he welcomes the new airline service to Guyana, which aims to provide flights three times a week to Canada and will also provide services from Georgetown to Houston, Texas in the United States.

Sky Cana is a hybrid airline that aims to operate with a low-cost business model with an emphasis on offering a high standard of service.

Just last month officials from the company visited the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to discuss setting up shop in Guyana and possible flight operations between Houston, Texas, and Toronto, Canada via the Dominican Republic. The CEO, Mr. Diaz said, “We are here to collaborate with Guyana and bring more operation. In terms to connect with many destination, we have aircraft up to 377 seats. We can…supply any needs that you have here in the country. ”

The airline has a wide range of fleets which includes the Airbus A330, Airbus A321, Airbus A320 and cargo aircrafts.

The government has been very open to new airlines servicing Guyana, with the most recent being British Airways, which officially commenced flights between Guyana and the United Kingdom via St. Lucia on March 27. That service provides Guyana with flights twice a week (Mondays and Thursdays) from the Gatwick International Airport in London to the CJIA.
