There is a high level of excitement over the University of Guyana’s 2023 Open Day and Job Fair tomorrow with several top private and public sector companies throwing their support behind the initiative.
During a simple ceremony held recently at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Turkeyen Campus, telephone giant, GTT Inc. cemented its participation by handing over a sponsorship cheque of USD $2000 towards the hosting of the event.
Guyana Standard understands that the University of Guyana, now in its 60th year, will be hosting its the Open Day and Job Fair on April 20-22, 2023, at Turkeyen Campus and April 28, 2023, at Tain Campus (Berbice), under the theme, ‘Advancing Local Content Priorities: Maximising Opportunities’.
At the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Prof. Paloma Mohamed Martin said, “This year’s Open Day and Job Fair has an innovative aspect to it, as the team at the Department of Events, Conferences and Communication (DECC) has added a job fair aspect…We have industry companies, mining companies, building companies, construction companies, and many more coming on board to offer internship and job opportunities.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Emanuel Cummings, with responsibility for Academic Engagement, thanked GTT Inc. for its support noting that it will enhance the development of UG’s human resource development as well as benefit the students and the entire University.
In handing over the cheque to UG’s Vice-Chancellor, GTT Inc.’s Project Coordinator, Sean Pemberton said, “GTT Inc. as a company would like to give back to our community and give back to the University. Especially since we know the University of Guyana has the largest academic population in the country.”
Pemberton, who is also UG’s 2021/22 Valedictorian added: “I’m also pleased to inform you that in addition to the lavish donation of USD 2000 GTT has promised to sponsor, full internet coverage, SMS marketing and radio coverage throughout the Open Day and Job Fair period.”
Several other companies have confirmed their partication in the event and will be providing job, training and internship opportunities, with some of these conducting on site interviews, these include: Guy Stock Exchange, Ministry of Natural Resources, Baker Hughes Guy., TechnipFMC, Ansa Mc Al, AGM Inc., CNOOC, Ministry of Public Service, NAREI, One Guyana Agricultre Inc., United Nations, Guyana Defence Force, SMB Offshore, MBW Energy Support Ser., John Fernandes Ltd, GTT, Ministry of Labour, Beharry Group of Companies, Banks DIH Limited, SLB, ExxonMobil, Guy Logistics and Sup. Serv., Halliburton, United Emergency Medical, Accountacy Training Medical, Demerara Distillers Ltd, Georgetown Technical Institute, Guyana Industial Training Centre,Saipem Guyana Offshore Construction, and Guyana Beverage Inc.
The Open Day component of the event will allow all potential University students an opportunity to explore the 150+ programmes being offered and learn about various career paths directly from Faculty and students. With respect to the Job Fair, this will provide information on job and internship opportunities being offered by top local and international organisations who will be present to connect with current UG students, alumni and the general public.
Students of senior secondary schools across Guyana, all post-secondary institutions, professionals from both the public and private sectors, and members of the public are invited to participate in this year’s Open Day and Job Fair. The event opens from 10 am to 4 pm daily and is open to the public. Admission is free.
