The Lusignan Prison hosted an anti-doping awareness seminar on Sunday, aimed at educating inmates on the dangers of drug use and abuse. The session, which was organized by the Welfare and Corrections Department in conjunction with the Men on Mission (MoM) health committee, was attended by 32 inmates.
Dr. Sarwan Jagnarain led the one-off seminar and highlighted the importance of raising awareness about drug abuse. He explained that peer pressure, curiosity, and an inability to manage stress are the primary factors behind drug addiction among youth. Dr. Jagnarain also discussed the de-addiction and rehabilitation process, as well as different types of intoxicants that lead to addiction, including cigarettes, liquor, tea, coffee, and drugs.
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, praised the MoM initiative and its significant impact on Guyana’s social landscape. The Men on Mission movement aims to encourage men to be responsible, serve as role models, and work towards building a progressive system to support Guyana’s developing society.
Marielle Bristol-Grant, Officer in Charge of Prisoners Welfare and Corrections, revealed that several more seminars are scheduled to be held at the Lusignan Facility with the MoM health committee to support the rehabilitation process. The seminar is part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting drug awareness and rehabilitation among inmates.
