Residents of First Avenue, Parfaite Harmonie have called on the relevant authorities to rehabilitate a double bridge which in their community which, according to them, could collapse at any minute, especially since several of its boards are either damaged or missing.
When Guyana Standard visited the area today, a closer look at the bridge displayed the frightening state, especially since what used to be rails have all fallen off the structure. Floor boards also seem to be missing, while others evidently collapsed under pressure.
A resident of the area told this news outlet that the bridge has been in the current state for over five years. It was further noted that the state of the bridge was both reported to the past and current administration, but this was to no avail.
“I don’t know if they’re waiting for this bridge to collapse before they do something about it but people hardly use it now, especially at night. Everyday either something falls off or it just gets worse,” the resident said.
The bridge gives access to the first avenue district of the Parfaite district. First avenue has a total of 18 streets, with more than 2000 homes. The first avenue district was the first community built when the Parfaite Harmonie scheme was being developed in 2005.
Another resident explained that while he is pleased about the rehabilitation of the access road and streets, the bridge should also be a priority for the relevant authorities.
“What’s the sense you’re doing roads and you don’t have a bridge? Right now we’re using the La Grange road and second bridge to get in here as an alternative. But the first bridge is easier. We really hope they do something quick. I won’t like nobody fall with that bridge,” the resident said.
Meanwhile, an official from the Ministry of Public Works confirmed that a contract was already awarded for the rehabilitation of the bridge. The official said that rehabilitation work is expected to begin sometime before the end of May.
