A tragic accident that occurred on Sunday night has left one person dead and several others injured. The incident took place at approximately 23:00hrs at the intersection of Camp and Church Streets, Georgetown.
The collision involved two motor vehicles: car PAD 8395, owned and driven by 34-year-old Shawn Phillip Parasram, and car PTT 7041, owned and driven by 63-year-old Sheik Rahman. Additionally, the latter vehicle was carrying two passengers, 30-year-old Ronda Holder and Natisha Natalie Fernandes, also 30 years old, from Kitty, Georgetown.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that car #PAD 8395 was traveling east on the southern side of Church Street when it approached the intersection with Camp Street. At the intersection, a traffic light was flashing a red signal. However, the driver of car PAD 8395 failed to stop, resulting in a collision with the right rear portion of car PTT 7041, which was heading south on the eastern drive lane of Camp Street. The impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles involved.
Emergency services were promptly called to the scene, and the driver and occupants of car PTT 7041 were immediately transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) for medical treatment. Sadly, Natisha Natalie Fernandes, one of the passengers, succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention. Her body has been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Ronda Holder and Sheik Rahman continue to receive medical care at GPHC, while Shawn Phillip Parasram was escorted by the police to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, officers from the Brickdam Traffic Department arrived at the scene to gather evidence and conduct an investigation. A breathalyzer test was administered to both drivers involved. The results indicated that the driver of car PAD 8395 had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels of 14% and 33%, while the driver of car PTT 7041 had BAC levels of 3% and 6%.
Both vehicles have been transported to the Alberttown Police Station for further examination by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
