In a significant move towards promoting fair and harmonious elections, Shaikh Moeenul Hack, Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), recently gathered political leaders, independent groups, and representatives from various organizations to sign a Code of Conduct for the upcoming Local Government Elections on June 12, 2023.

During the ceremony, Hack highlighted the importance of the Code of Conduct, emphasizing its role in advancing the best interests of Guyana and its people. As a constitutional body entrusted with fostering harmony and good relations, he said that his organisation believes that responsible approaches and adherence to the Code of Conduct are crucial to ensuring the remaining campaign period remains free from ethnic division, discrimination, hate speech, incitement, and provocation.

Expressing his gratitude for the unanimous support received, Hack commended all participants, including political parties, independent groups, diplomatic missions, and civil society, for recognizing the significance of this initiative. He stressed that the promotion of harmony requires a collective effort from those currently holding public offices and those aspiring to do so, as they possess significant influence that can positively shape public discourse.

In light of the country’s historical context, the Chairman called for a multipronged approach to reduce tension during this sensitive period and reaffirmed the ERC’s earlier call for peaceful, free, and fair elections. He commended the political leaders and candidates involved in making the signing possible, emphasizing that the ERC cannot fulfil its mandate in isolation but requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders.

In conclusion, Hack urged everyone to renew their commitment to this noble cause, emphasizing the Commission’s reliance on the joint endeavours of the entire Guyanese community.

The signing of the Code of Conduct represents a crucial step forward, Hack said while also expressing his hope that it would contribute to a less challenging path in promoting harmony.
