The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) International is set to host a workshop focused on the Guyana/Suriname Basin under the theme, “Strategic development of resources during the energy transition.” It is scheduled to take place from October 3-4, 2023 at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown. SPE said the event will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaborative discussions, and advancement in the industry.
With a specific emphasis on technology, subsurface evaluation, and sustainable development, the workshop will also aim to provide a forum where industry professionals, decision-makers from the governments of Guyana and Suriname, and representatives from civil society can come together to contribute to the growth and progress of the emerging offshore oil and gas sector in the region.
SPE has also underlined the importance of collective knowledge sharing, open dialogue, and the transferability of learnings as integral elements of the workshop.
In defining the vision for the Guyana/Suriname Basin Workshop, SPE expressed its commitment to fostering an environment where ideas can be shared and integrated across companies, professionals, and delegates, thus supporting the development of the oil and gas industry in the region.
With a focus on cutting-edge technology, effective subsurface evaluation techniques, and sustainable practices, it indicated that the workshop holds immense potential to shape the future of the Guyana/Suriname Basin.
Notably, the government of Guyana has recently expressed a keen interest in collaborating with Suriname on matters related to oil and gas.
In a recent press conference, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo revealed that Guyana’s National Gas Strategy will comprehensively examine key areas, including the potential for a joint venture with Suriname. Recognizing Suriname’s notable gas field discoveries, he said the government aims to explore collaborative development opportunities to maximize the monetization of resources beyond the Liza field within the esteemed Stabroek Block.
SPE International, a respected not-for-profit professional association, boasts a membership of over 119,000 professionals in 138 countries who are actively involved in the exploration and production of oil, gas, and related energy resources.
With offices located in Calgary, Canada; Dallas, Texas; Dubai, Houston, Texas; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and London, SPE serves as a resource hub, facilitating valuable technical exchanges, providing professional development opportunities, and disseminating knowledge through publications, training programs, and a variety of member-driven initiatives.
