The Security Council assumes the primary role in ascertaining the presence of threats to peace or acts of aggression. It calls upon disputing parties to seek peaceful resolutions and recommends methods of reconciliation or terms of settlement. In certain cases, the Security Council may resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.
