Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 47-year-old Lakeram Etwaroo of Lot 42 Diamond New Housing Scheme, who died following an accident yesterday at Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The accident occurred about 23:50hrs in the vicinity of John Fernandes, and involved motor lorry #GDD 3729 owned and driven by 52-year-old Mohan Ram Narine, of lot 11 Airy Hall Public Road, Essequibo Coast. The now-deceased was riding motorcycle CH 2546.

Preliminary inquiries reveal that the driver of the motor lorry, Narine, claimed that he was travelling east along Nelson Mandela Avenue on the southern side. As he approached the traffic light, he observed that the light was green in his direction. However, the light for the southbound lane was red, so he stopped and waited for it to turn green. Once the turning light changed to green, Narine proceeded to make a right turn, intending to head south onto John Fernandes Access Road.

Unfortunately, at that moment, motorcycle CH 2546 was approaching from the west at a high rate of speed along the center of the road. The motorcycle collided with the left side rear wheel of the motor lorry. The impact caused the motorcyclist, Etwaroo, to fall to the ground, sustaining severe injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were immediately called to the scene, and Etwaroo was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at 23:55 hrs by Doctor Dorga.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of motor lorry #GDD 3729 and he had no trace of alcohol in his breath. Both the motor lorry and motorcycle were lodged at the station and the driver is in custody. Further investigations are ongoing.
