Police are investigating a fire of unknown origin, which partially destroyed the dwelling house of Terry Persaud Lall, a 38-year-old fisherman of Lot 4 Paradise, Essequibo Coast. The incident, which occurred at around 21:30hrs on Sunday, is believed to have resulted in Lall’s death.
Enquiries disclosed that Lall lived alone in a one-flat concrete house (20 feet by 15 feet) on the western side of Paradise Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
Lall’s sister, Somattie Persaud, a 41-year-old security guard who lives in the same yard (Lot 4 Paradise), claimed that around 13:00hrs yesterday, her brother left his home and went to Lake Mainstay.
She said her brother returned home at about 19:00hrs last evening. She told cops that he was highly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The woman claimed that around 21:30hrs, she was at her home when she saw a fire emanating from her brother’s house. As a result, the fire service and the police were informed.
The region’s fire department went into action and extinguished the fire, but by then, the western half of the house was completely destroyed. Burnt human remains, suspected to be those of Lall, were seen among the debris,
The remains were removed and escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
