Those caught paying “middlemen” for house lots may spoil their chances of acquiring lands in the future, Guyana’s Vice-President (VP), Bharrat Jagdeo has warned.

The VP was at the time commenting on the incidents of citizens being conned while trying to acquire house lots through persons pretending to be, or claiming to have “connections” to top officials at the Ministry of Housing’s Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).

“Don’t give them your money. Every week people come to cry, cry by us… If you do it and we find out, you may not even get a house lot that you are eligible for if you apply for it. Please don’t go through middlemen. There is no middleman there,” Jagdeo said.

Jagdeo also noted that the government is willing to cooperate with victims of extortion by setting up sting operations.

“So, people need to see if they are being shaken down, don’t come and tell us afterwards…We can set up a sting…So, we can set up a sting and find people and then you put it before the police,” the VP said.
