Police are investigating a fatal incident that occurred at about 18:30 hrs yesterday (Monday) on the Lethem Trail Road, North Rupununi, in the vicinity of Canopy Bridge. Two persons are reported dead.
The tragic incident involved a motor lorry, GXX 5420, driven by Orlando King, a 29-year-old from North Rupununi; and occupant, Orin Fraser (age unknown) of Tucville, Georgetown.
Enquiries disclosed that the lorry was proceeding north along the Lethem Trail Road in the vicinity of Canopy, and while crossing a wooden bridge, the vehicle slipped.
Reports suggest that planks on the bridge might have been “rotten”. The lorry fell into the creek 25 feet below. It turned turtle and submerged under water. Both occupants were trapped in the cabin. The men were pulled from the cabin by public-spirited citizens and police ranks. They were placed in a police vehicle and escorted to the Annai Health Center, where they were pronounced dead.
The bodies were escorted to the Lethem Regional Hospital’s Mortuary. Further enquiries are in progress.
