A fatal accident occurred last night at the Beterverwagting Police Station as Woman Constable 25953 Annette Abel, 53, lost her life while on duty during a roadblock operation. The incident took place at approximately 22:00hrs on Thursday.

Constable Abel, a dedicated member of the Traffic Department attached to the BV Police Station, was struck down when a speeding Jeep, bearing registration number PVV 8278, ignored traffic lights, lost control, and collided with her and another colleague. The tragic accident involved multiple vehicles, including motor cars PAB 9932 and PNN 8124.

The Jeep’s driver, a 44-year-old man from Front Road, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, disregarded a red traffic signal at the junction of Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, and the East Coast Highway. The collision resulted in a chain reaction, involving the motor cars and pedestrians at the roadblock.

Woman Inspector Shenay Castello, in charge at the Beterverwagting Police Station, was among those injured in the incident. The roadblock, commanded by Inspector Castello, was manned by a team of officers, including Corporal 21289 Keshan Collins, Lance Corporal 21463 Jenella Jonas, Woman Constable 25925 Annette Abel (the deceased), Constable 25124 Brian Tappin, and Constable 24718 Wayne Daniels.

During the collision, Woman Constable Abel was propelled about 20 feet away, with her left foot severed below the knee. Despite the prompt arrival of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The occupants of the Jeep sustained injuries and were transported, alongside Woman Inspector Castello, to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention at the Accident and Emergency Unit. Meanwhile, the body of Woman Constable Abel was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.

Regional Commander 4ā€˜Cā€™ Assistant Commissioner Khali Pareshram, along with a team of police ranks, visited the scene last night, and investigations into the incident are ongoing. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers while on duty.
