Major American airline, United Airlines announced on Thursday that it will be offering direct flights from Georgetown to Huston from April 2024.

The airline, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois recently announced that the upcoming winter season will witness a remarkable 10 percent increase in its capacity, solidifying its position as the airline with the broadest reach from Houston. This expansion will see United serving more than double the number of cities from Houston compared to all other airlines combined.

A noteworthy development in United’s itinerary is the introduction of non-stop service between Houston and Georgetown, Guyana, commencing on April 1, 2024. This route will operate four times a week, utilizing the Boeing 737-MAX 8 aircraft. This move positions United as the first airline to offer direct flights on this route, providing a valuable link for travelers.

The airline’s extensive network from Houston encompasses over 160 destinations, with a unique advantage of serving more than 85 locations that remain untouched by other carriers’ non-stop services. Among these destinations are key locations like Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama, Peru, and more, that usually take almost 24 hours of flight time despite being significantly closer to Guyana than other countries like the United States which requires a flight time of four to nine hours (non-stop).

United’s commitment to expanding its reach is evident in the addition of over 20 new destinations from Houston over the past decade. Notable among these are connections to Sydney, Australia; Santiago, Chile; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Munich, Germany, and more. This strategic growth aligns with the evolving needs of travelers and underscores the airline’s role in facilitating global connectivity.

The timing of this expansion coincides with the surge in Guyana’s oil and gas sector, attracting increased attention from various airlines. United’s foray into the Houston-Georgetown route reflects the industry’s recognition of the growing opportunities in this region.

It is worth mentioning that a number of oil and gas companies and oil and gas service providers are located in Houston, Texas and with the new route to be introduced, there will be enhanced connectivity and even a possible ease to some of their operations.

As other carriers join the fray, the skies over Guyana are witnessing a notable influx of new airline services, further solidifying the country’s position as a key player in the global aviation landscape.
