The Guyana Shore Base Inc. (GYSBI) recently submitted a comprehensive project summary to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the establishment of a sand screens warehouse, situated at the western end of GYSBI’s Industrial Estate in Tract GIL2 & AM1, Rome, East Bank Demerara.

Sand screens, commonly used in the oil and gas industry, are a type of equipment designed to filter out sand and other fine particles from the oil or gas extracted from wells. This is crucial because the presence of sand can damage equipment, reduce the efficiency of the extraction process, and compromise the integrity of the well.

These screens are typically installed in the wellbore, and their design allows fluids (oil, gas, and water) to pass through while retaining sand and other particulate matter. Guyana Standard understand that the effectiveness of sand screens is vital for preventing sand production, which can lead to issues like erosion of equipment, blockages, and even well failure.

GYSBI was keen to note that the operations of its proposed warehouse do not involve production but instead facilitate the storage and inspection of sand screens. This is to ensure the smooth flow of oil and natural gas during offshore drilling operations.

When needed for offshore operations, certified cargo-carrying units would transport them to GYSBI’s main port with careful consideration of management processes.

While an estimated cost for the project was not given, the screens warehouse project will provide employment for approximately 30 locals, spanning logistics, supervision, maintenance, and equipment operation roles. GYSBI envisions the operations as permanent.
