Following the March 2023 introduction of a British Airways flight between Guyana to London, an impressive 20,000 passengers have travelled this route, according to Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond. During her contribution to the 2024 budget debates, the minister said this underscores the success of the strategic decision to enhance air connectivity between Guyana and the United Kingdom.
“That is how we were quietly letting the results speak for themselves,” the minister noted.
Her revelation was made in response to criticisms from the opposition regarding the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration’s policies.
The minister shared that flights operate twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, departing from the Gatwick International Airport in London and arriving at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). The airline employs the 777-200ER aircraft, boasting a capacity of up to 332 passengers. It’s noteworthy that these flights, while not non-stop, serve as a valuable “tag on” to the airline’s direct flight service to St. Lucia.
The positive impact on tourism is evident, according to Walrond as Guyanese citizens now enjoy visa-free travel to the United Kingdom, contributing to the surge in passenger numbers. Addressing concerns about the administration’s approach, the minister also highlighted the impressive growth in visitor arrivals.
Notably, visitor arrivals in 2023 exceeded 319,000, marking a significant milestone in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The context is crucial, considering the challenging years of 2020 and 2021, where arrivals increased by 83% and 82%, respectively. She was also keen to note that the data underscores a remarkable 270% increase in visitor arrivals over the three years since the PPP administration took office.
Walrond also indicated that the surge in passenger numbers and tourism metrics not only validates the strategic decision to introduce British Airways to Guyana’s aviation landscape but also reflects a positive trend in the country’s tourism industry.
In addition, she said her administration remains committed to furthering initiatives that promote connectivity and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
