Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal on Thursday outlined a comprehensive five-year plan aimed at transforming water access across Guyana which will bring potable water to every household in the hinterland.
During his 2024 budget debate presentation, Minister Croal declared, “By 2025, our commitment is clear – 100 percent of the hinterland will have access to water, while 90 percent of the coastland will receive treated water.”
He added that the ministry is taking a significant step forward by implementing the first wastewater treatment plant for Georgetown, which has an estimated cost of approximately US$40 million.
The minister recently emphasized the importance of wastewater management and highlighted its often-overlooked role in environmental responsibility. He stressed the need for modern, eco-friendly treatment facilities to reduce pollution, safeguard aquatic ecosystems, and promote water recycling.
The minister reported notable achievements in 2023, with 35,000 households receiving potable water for the first time. The ongoing efforts include the construction of seven new water treatment plants, upgrading 12 existing ones, and plans for five more in the future.
Hinterland water supply also saw significant improvements in 2023 with the drilling of over 60 new wells in hinterland and riverine communities.
He said too that access to potable water in the hinterland increased from 46 percent in 2020 to an impressive 82 percent by the end of 2023. The minister said also that water losses decreased from 69 percent in 2020 to 62 percent in 2023, while meter coverage rose from 53 percent to 67 percent. Further, the minister said over 55,000 meters were installed, contributing to increased water conservation and reduced non-revenue water.
Minister Croal also reiterated his government’s commitment to achieving 99 percent population access to potable water by the end of 2025, emphasizing the desired impact and outcomes at the national level.
Overall, he said his ministry’s comprehensive plan reflects a dedicated effort to enhance water access, reduce environmental impact, and ensure sustainable water management for the nation.
