Region Six residents will soon benefit from modernized healthcare through the US$161 million New Amsterdam Hospital being led by the Ministry of Health.

The ministry in its recent proposal for the hospital’s construction noted that as the population burgeons, the demand for quality health services is outpacing the capacities of the current regional public health facilities, compelling many to seek medical care in Georgetown or at private hospitals. In response to this pressing need, the New Amsterdam General Hospital aims to become a comprehensive healthcare hub for the region.

The ministry said a rapid feasibility assessment signalled a diverse range of services required. As such, the new hospital will be poised to offer Accident and Emergency Services, General In-Patient Facilities, a Surgical Centre, Outpatient Department, Specialized Clinics, Delivery Suites, Dialysis Center, and much more.

The physical infrastructure, according to the ministry took meticulous planning, with multi-story structures adhering to the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) building codes. It will also embrace the SMART hospital principles outlined by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), ensuring safety, environmental consciousness, and efficiency.

It also revealed that employment prospects will accompany this healthcare venture, providing 200 jobs during development and sustaining nearly 260 positions during full operations. The ministry pledged to actively recruit professional health staff, drawing talent from within Guyana and across the Caribbean, North America, and Europe.

The diverse team will include Medical Consultants, Specialists, General Medical Practitioners, Nursing Staff, Allied Health Professionals, and Administrative Personnel. This array of expertise will ensure the delivery of comprehensive and quality healthcare services.

According to the Health Ministry, the New Amsterdam General Hospital will embody a vision of modern, accessible, and sustainable healthcare, poised to elevate the well-being of the community it serves.
