Dear Editor,
There is a significant oil spill in Caribbean waters off the coast of Tobago, which should have galvanized our local environmentalists into action. However, I am yet to see or hear a peep from this crew. Is our ‘international’ lawyer on the way to the Twin Island Republic to offer pro bono advice and service via sailboat? (No self-respecting environmentalist would fly on petroleum-powered aircraft).
Why are none of the regulars asking if the ship that capsized has unlimited insurance or a parent company guarantee? Why are there no calls for us to sue Trinidad & Tobago for polluting the seas? Surely, we can muster outrage or at the very least, a fit of pique.
I sincerely hope that the owners of the vessel face the full brunt of the law and pay all costs, including cleanup and damages. I had hoped that our local environmentalists would at least comment on this incident that has done damage to waters, marine life, beaches, tourism business, and people’s personal lives in and around Tobago. Sadly it seems, ‘No Exxon, No interest’ or perhaps it is simply a case of ‘no money, no love’ from these insincere environmentalists?
