Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred about 19:22 hrs last evening on Quarrie Access Trail in Central Rupununi, Region Nine, which resulted in the death of Karl Lewis, a 52-year-old Deputy Toshao of Shulinab Village, South Central Rupununi.
The accident involved a motor pickup, PVV 1398, owned by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and driven at the time by a 39-year-old resident of Lethem, and a motorcycle driven by Lewis.
Enquiries disclosed that the motorcyclist was proceeding south along the eastern side of Quarrie Access Trail, while the pick up was proceeding north along the eastern side of Quarrie Access Trail at a fast rate, and in the path of the motorcyclist.
According to police, the driver of the pick up was imbibing alcoholic beverages at Katoonarib Village with a friend before they left for Lethem.
The driver of the pickup attempted to swerve away from the motorcyclist but failed to avoid a collision. As a result, the motorcyclist fell onto the surface of the road, receiving injuries on his body. The motorcycle then became engulfed in flames.
Karl Lewis was picked up by the police and public-spirited citizens in an unconscious condition and taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where, on arrival, he was seen and examined by Dr Lefane Luxmana who pronounced him dead on arrival. The body was escorted to the Lethem Regional Hospital’s Mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The driver of the pickup is in custody.
