Commissioner of Police (ag), Clifton Anthony Hicken has submitted a proposal to the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a sand mining project aimed at meeting the rising demand for silica sand in Guyana. The project which will cost US$104,000 is located at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke- Linden Highway, and aims to extract silica sand on a commercial scale, addressing the increasing need for this versatile material.

Silica sand, a ubiquitous material with diverse industrial applications, including glass making, road paving, foundries, and filtration, is the primary focus of the project. It was noted that with a global silica sand market valued at approximately US$14.1 billion in 2020 and expected moderate growth in the coming years, the project aligns with increasing demand driven by the construction, automotive, and shale gas industries.

It was further noted that locally, infrastructure projects such as the Linden-Mabura Road and the East Coast-East Bank by-pass, along with upcoming commercial developments, signal a surge in demand for sand and related materials. As existing sand pits near exhaustion along the Linden Soesdyke Highway, the project seeks to ensure a sustainable supply chain for the local market.

Project costs, totaling US$104,000, include initial setup, ongoing capital, waste management, infrastructure, and contingency expenses, reflecting a comprehensive approach to project planning and execution.

The proposal was keen to note that the project scope encompasses detailed operational parameters, emergency response measures, environmental management strategies, and plans for site reclamation and closure.

Commissioner Hicken through his proposal underscored the importance of proactive measures to address evolving economic and environmental needs while meeting the demands of a growing society. It was noted that while Guyana navigates its development trajectory, initiatives like the sand mining project play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable resource management and economic growth.
