Operator of Guyana’s Stabroek Block, ExxonMobil, has unveiled ambitious plans to bolster its operations with the establishment of a coastal telecommunications station within the Georgetown to Vreed-en-Hoop area. This initiative, outlined in a comprehensive Request for Information (RFI), marks an important milestone in the company’s strategy to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency in the burgeoning Guyanese oil and gas sector.
The significance of coastal telecommunications stations in the oil and gas industry cannot be overstated. Beyond facilitating seamless communication between offshore platforms and onshore facilities, these vital infrastructure nodes serve as conduits for critical data transmission, emergency response coordination, remote monitoring and control, weather forecasting, and logistical support.
Exxon noted the primary objective of the RFI is to identify qualified suppliers capable of providing a suitable mounting location for the telecommunications station. Its specifications underscored the critical role this infrastructure will play in supporting Gas to Energy pipeline operations, necessitating robust solutions that meet stringent technical requirements.
Key provisions outlined in the RFI include the supply of a mounting location for two Vesper Guardian (VG) systems, along with provisions for power, ethernet connectivity (where available), and security measures to safeguard the VG systems. Additionally, suppliers must ensure reasonable access for installation and maintenance activities related to the VG Systems, reflecting Exxon’s commitment to operational integrity and continuity.
Furthermore, the company has articulated specific preferences for the mounting location, stipulating a height of approximately 20 meters above mean sea level and a strategic positioning within the Georgetown or Vreed- en-Hoop area. Crucially, the selected site must afford an unobstructed view north of the ocean and be situated in close proximity to the seawall, ensuring optimal signal reception and operational efficacy.
Moreover, the company reiterated its unwavering commitment to local content development and its broader ethos of sustainable growth and community engagement. Prospective contractors are mandated to demonstrate a keen awareness of the Local Content Act (2021) throughout the bidding process, with an emphasis on fostering workforce and supplier capabilities within the local ecosystem.
Against the backdrop of ExxonMobil’s ambitious expansion plans in the Stabroek block, with projections to deploy six Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessels by 2027, the imperative for robust telecommunications infrastructure becomes all the more pronounced.
