TechnipFMC, a global leader in oil and gas projects, has taken a significant step forward in bolstering its support for ExxonMobil’s operations offshore Guyana with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new location in Georgetown, Guyana.
The newly established TechnipFMC location is strategically positioned to provide essential support for the second phase of the Liza project, along with future projects in the region. This move underscores TechnipFMC’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Guyana, where it has been actively involved since 2016.
In reaffirming its dedication to local development, TechnipFMC has prioritized training initiatives for Guyanese employees. As part of its commitment, the company has invested in the training of 27 local employees, who undergo a comprehensive 12 to 18-month apprentice programme. These individuals will then transition into operational roles to support ExxonMobil project activities offshore Guyana.
Currently, eight employees are undergoing training at TechnipFMC’s Brazil office in Rio de Janeiro. Additionally, a new batch of eight individuals is set to commence their training journey in mid-February 2019, with the goal of becoming Technical Service Providers (TSP). This proactive approach not only lays the foundation for TechnipFMC’s operations in Guyana but also nurtures future leaders within the country.
Rod Henson, former Country Manager at ExxonMobil Guyana, who was present at the ceremony emphasized the significance of local content development in project stewardship. He highlighted TechnipFMC’s role as a prime contractor in driving local capacity building, which aligns with the broader objective of fostering growth and opportunity in Guyana.
He said, “Local Content development is a vital part of project stewardship and our commitment to Guyana. Local content and capacity building will continue through our prime contractors — such as TechnipFMC — as projects progress,” Henson said, adding that “This ground breaking is an example of future growth and opportunity in Guyana.”
Meanwhile, Jeff Mathews, Vice President of Subsea Services North America, expressed pride in TechnipFMC’s investment in Guyanese talent, foreseeing a positive impact on local communities. He reiterated the company’s commitment to expanding its local footprint in Guyana, thereby contributing to the nation’s promising future.
“We are proud to have invested in Guyanese employees who will make positive impact to their local communities. We look forward to expanding our local footprint in Guyana and building a base that will contribute to the positive future of the country,” he commented.
The Liza 1 &2 projects which are operated ExxonMobil Guyana are situated in the Stabroek block approximately 193 km (120 miles) offshore Guyana. With water depths ranging from 1,500 m (4,900 ft) to 1,900 m (6,200 ft), this development is estimated to yield over 1 billion oil-equivalent barrels, marking a significant milestone in the region’s oil and gas industry.
The company has noted that its groundbreaking ceremony for its new location signifies a pivotal moment in Guyana’s energy landscape, heralding a new era of collaboration and growth in the offshore sector. As the nation continues to emerge as a key player in the global energy arena, partnerships like these are poised to drive sustainable development and prosperity for years to come.
