Georgetown’s Meadowbank Wharf is poised for additional enhancements, as the Government of Guyana (GoG) intensifies efforts to improve working conditions for local traders. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently visited the site, noting plans for further developments.

On Thursday morning, President Ali accompanied by Minister of Agriculture, Mustapha Zulfikar visited the Meadowbank Wharf.

During the interaction the head-of-state interacted with fisherfolk and vendors, he listened to their concerns in relation to the conditions under which they ply their trade. Key issues raised included the necessity for running water, wharf rehabilitation, and improved lighting for safety during early hours.

President Ali pledged to streamline operations, stating, “One of the things we want to do, is we want to make it easier for you all.”

Notably, he announced that the road leading to the wharf will be rehabilitated and that standpipes will be erected at the location. A shed will also be constructed to accommodate the fisherfolk.

The head-of-state also set a two-week deadline for the submission of wharf design plans to expedite rehabilitation efforts.

Reflecting on recent progress, one fisherman noted, “Mr. President, since the last time you came to now, there’s great improvement because we get to come to work early … we get the toilet…we get the security.”

This latest initiative builds upon previous upgrades, such as lighting installation and washroom facilities, initiated after President Ali’s 2022 visit. Additionally, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) maintains a presence to ensure ongoing safety for all on the wharf. (Information taken from DPI)
