Local Financial Analyst, Joel Bhagwandin has voiced both praise and concern regarding President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s intervention in the affairs of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL). Bhagwandin commended the President for taking action but also highlighted underlying issues within the management of GPL and its historical context.

He acknowledged President Ali’s intervention as necessary, yet regrettable due to the perceived failures of those previously tasked with oversight. He noted that despite the delegation of responsibilities, the President has been compelled to step in, indicating a systemic failure within the organization.

“President Irfaan Ali’s intervention in the affairs of GPL is a commendable step, albeit one that should not have been necessary. It reflects a failure of oversight and accountability within the organization,” he noted.

However, Bhagwandin does not share the sentiment of those who believe that the status quo at GPL will persist despite the President’s intervention. Drawing attention to a recent letter in the Stabroek News penned by former Minister David Patterson, Bhagwandin suggested a broader perspective on the issue.

Contrary to Patterson’s accusations of a government cover-up regarding GPL’s mismanagement, Bhagwandin asserted that his extensive study of GPL’s operations over the past decade has revealed a different narrative. He alleged that the management of GPL, with complicity at ministerial levels, has intentionally manipulated executive authorities to shield the entity from scrutiny and accountability.

Highlighting the failure to submit statutory reports to the National Assembly as a means of evading accountability, Bhagwandin questioned Patterson’s sudden emergence as a solution provider. He called for Patterson to explain his own actions during his tenure as the subject minister for GPL, suggesting complicity in the organization’s shortcomings.

In contrast, Bhagwandin commended President Ali for his proactive approach in holding individuals accountable within GPL. He praised the President for avoiding the mistakes of his predecessors and emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
