Dear Editor,

Nigel Hughes made a plea to the United Nations for Guyana to teach “victim centered history” , this is exactly the worst thing we can do. I have witnessed the negative impact on the psyche of Afro-Guyanese with this approach over decades; so much so that many equate agriculture with ‘slavery’ and, taking instructions from management (especially other races) as a ‘return of Massa’.

May I suggest (once again) a positive approach to history that highlights the achievements of Afro-Guyanese (and others of African descent) despite the adversity of slavery. I seriously suggest that we heed the words of Bob Marley and “emancipate ourselves from mental slavery” failing which, I fear, a Century dedicated to the advancement of People of African Descent would be of no significant effect.

Sincerely
Robin Singh
