ExxonMobil Guyana President, Alistair Routledge announced in a press conference this morning, the imminent arrival of a capping stack, a crucial piece of equipment that was required by the licence for the company’s Yellowtail project. This technology is pivotal for well control operations, especially in emergency situations such as blowouts.
In the context of oil and gas drilling, a capping stack serves as a crucial tool for regaining control over a well in the event of a blowout or other emergencies. Comprising valves, rams, and connectors, the capping stack is designed to seal off a wellhead, preventing the uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons and minimizing environmental damage.
Routledge emphasized the company’s commitment to investing in a capping stack as part of the Yellowtail project, highlighting its importance in ensuring operational safety. He mentioned that while similar technology is available worldwide, ExxonMobil will be importing one specifically for use in Guyana. “
“You will recall that as part of the Yellowtail project, we committed to invest in a what’s called a capping stack,” he noted.
The arrival of the capping stack is significant not only for ExxonMobil but also for Guyana’s oil industry as a whole. According to Anthony Jackson, Exxon’s Project Manager, who spoke about the equipment months ago, having a capping stack maintained, tested, and stored in the country is a key provision in the project’s permit. This requirement underscores the country’s preparedness to handle potential oil spills offshore.
Jackson, was at the time speaking at a scoping meeting for Exxon’s Whiptail project, and emphasized the rarity of having a capping stack in-country, highlighting its importance in mitigating the risks associated with oil and gas drilling. He stressed that very few countries worldwide have such equipment readily available.
Routledge revealed that upon its arrival the media will be allowed to view it and document it for the public’s viewing.
