Leader of the Opposition, Aubrey Norton, announced today that discussions on the renewal of the coalition pact between A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance for Change (AFC) will take place after the parties’ respective congresses.
These events are scheduled for June 28 and June 29, 2024. Norton made this statement during a press conference on Thursday morning.
The coalition agreement, known as the Cummingsburg Accord, was originally signed by APNU and AFC in 2015 and revised in 2019.
With general and regional elections approaching next year, Norton was asked about the future of the agreement. He responded, “Both the APNU and AFC will be having congress around the same time and therefore I don’t think at this stage that will be discussed it will be clearly after the congress where the leadership will have obtained the mandate of the membership..”
Norton also addressed concerns raised by People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Central Executive Committee Member Dr. Gary Best, who argued that the one-month notice for the party’s congress is too short.
Norton explained that the decision to hold the congress at the end of June was made by the PNCR’s central executive committee members who were present at the meeting. He further stated, “And may I point out that there has been a congress that occurred in a shorter time than this so I don’t see the question as a valid question,” Norton said. ”
He added, “May I also add that you’re aware that many persons were calling for Congress and now they have Congress.”
Regarding concerns that the simultaneous congresses might be a strategy for PNCR members to attend the AFC congress to boost attendance, Norton clarified, “I don’t know how our Congress will be shared with the AFC.”
To this end, he underscored that PNCR members are different from AFC members and will therefore attend their respective party events.
