Guyana’s Vice-President, Bharrat Jagdeo is not satisfied with the pace at which the Guyana Police Force (GPF) detects and goes after suspects accused of committing cybercrime, especially those involving politicians.

The former Head of State during a press conference this week told media operatives that the police are also “delinquent”, referencing the recent incident involving an Executive Member of the Working Peoples’ Alliance (WPA)’s Kadackie Amsterdam’s arrest for allegedly inciting violence against the President and other government officials during a live show.

Amsterdam, the host of the programme, reportedly presided over a segment when a caller spoke about the decapitation of the Head of State, the Vice-President and at least two others senior government officials.

Jagdeo, when asked to proffer a comment said, “Police were a bit delinquent. They are slow on these matters.”

He added that the GPF must address such matters seriously, “not because it’s personal but because if we allow this violent rhetoric to take hold of our society, it could lead to unintended consequences”.

The Vice-President went on to say that the Police Force might be unwilling to address these issues because there is an expectation that politicians should act within the confines of the law. However, he emphasized that the GPF is responsible for continuously addressing these matters seriously and promptly.

“As I said before, I think the police are also delinquent in these matters. It’s almost like you don’t want to interfere in these issues because politicians shouldn’t do that.

“But the police and the others are responsible for looking at these matters and addressing them seriously. They deal with these matters routinely. I’ve seen some very egregious cases not involving politicians that they deal with routinely. And they need to move faster on these matters,” the VP stressed.
