In a recent notice, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has announced its phased relocation to the former Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) building located at the corner of High & Princess Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
According to the notice, the transition began with the Information, Communication & Technology Department, which has been fully operational at the new location since May 20, 2024. Following suit, effective May 28, 2024, the Finance Division, Mines Division (including Mines Clerical, Mines Inspectorate, Surveying Unit, Mines Technical), and Land Management Division have all been relocated and are now accessible at the new premises.
Notably, this initial relocation signifies the first stage of the transition, focusing on divisions that engage daily with the public and stakeholders. Subsequent moves will encompass back-office operations and various secretariats.
It was stated that relocation not only denotes a change of location but also represents an upgrade in facilities and the adoption of new technologies. It symbolizes a new beginning for the commission, underscored by a unified service location, a renewed dedication to professionalism and customer service, and a focused approach to the development of the mining sector.
The GGMC expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders during this transition, reaffirming its commitment to providing the sector with the high level of service it requires and deserves. The edifice, was previously unused. GGMC commenced retrofitting work on the building in the latter half of 2022, with no official announcement regarding the expenditure for the remedial work.
The building, originally constructed at a cost of $600 million for the government in 2008, has been embroiled in controversy due to a series of construction-related issues. Originally intended to house the Ministry of Labour, the 65,000-square-foot facility had remained unoccupied until GGMC relocated.
