The 2024 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results have shown remarkable improvements in three key subject areas: Mathematics, Social Studies, and English. A total of 15,283 students participated in the assessment, setting new benchmarks for academic performance.
The Ministry of Education is announcing this year’s results at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC). Dr. Nicole Manning, Director of Operations at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), opened the ceremony today with an overview of the subject performances.
Dr. Manning highlighted significant achievements in English, noting, “We saw an overall increase in terms of the percentage of candidates earning 50% and above. This of course is the highest we have seen over the last five years.”
She added that this year saw a reduction in the number of candidates receiving zero as well as an increase from 61% to 72% in terms of candidates receiving full scores.
“So I think that’s something also worthy of applauding those candidates,” Dr. Manning added.
In Social Studies, there was a substantial improvement with 62.88% students receiving over 50%. “Phenomenal for us is this great increase of the number of candidates receiving full marks in terms of Social Studies this year, moving from 17% to 52%, worthy of an applause as well as a reduction in the number of candidates receiving zero is always very important,” she added.
Mathematics saw a notable increase in performance too. Dr. Manning underscored its importance, saying, “Over 40.36% earning 50% and above and this is the highest over the last five years.”
She noted that this increase is not only a win for Guyana but also for CXC since the subject area is one that the region struggles with.
Moreover, the ministry official said there was a slight decrease in Science, with a 1% drop in the percentage of candidates earning 50% and above. Overall, she said this performance by the nation’s students is commendable, setting new benchmarks for 2025.
