The government has announced the conclusion of the conciliation process initiated by the Ministry of Education to engage the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) regarding the timeline for a multi-year agreement.
Guyana Standard understands that the
conciliation process has ended with the parties agreeing that the multi-year agreement will address a period commencing from 2024 and onwards.
The GTU had wanted the agreement to go back as far as 2019, while the government was adamant that negotiations should focus on the present year and future ones.
Prior to conciliation, the GTU ended a strike action across the country spanning more than 70 days.
Attempts to deduct pays from those striking teachers were barred by a court ruling. The government has since moved to overturn that decision.
Bilateral talks will now begin on the multi-year agreement from 2024 and onwards.
