Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. says he is not convinced that the new Alliance for Change (AFC) Leader, Nigel Hughes, has what it takes to faithfully represent Guyana’s interests.
During a recent interview, Ramson noted that it was Hughes and the AFC that had no qualms in accepting fraudulent votes during the March 2020 General Elections and the alleged attempt to “partition” the country after the AFC and its other half, the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) lost the 2020 poll.
He added that Hughes and the AFC’s past actions have rendered them unpatriotic and not “nationalist”.
Minister Ramson noted that Hughes’ recent comment about priorities in representing oil companies while leading a political party illustrates that the Attorney-at-law-turned-politican should not be given power.
“Nigel Hughes and the AFC were willing to open the discussion of the partition (breaking up) of Guyana when APNU-AFC lost the election they tried to rig in 2020 – that is how unpatriotic they are – that is why it is no surprise to me that Nigel Hughes said he would put his client’s interest (Exxon) above the interest of Guyana,” Ramson said.
Hughes was quoted by the Demerara Waves as saying: “If you hired me in a case against the Government of Guyana and you’re going to get an advantage to the disadvantage to the citizens, are you saying I should compromise the quality of advice I give to you and the quality of representation I give to you because Guyana is on the other side? That can’t be right.”
