Naasik Alli, a 32-year-old hire taxi driver of Number 75 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, was arrested on July 10 and charged yesterday (Friday) with Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.
The charge was laid under section (5) (1) (a) (i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act Chapter 10:10.
The defendant appeared at the Albion Magistrates’ Court before Her Worship Tuanna Hardy, where the charge was read to him. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years, eight months imprisonment. He was also fined $104,977,620.
Naasik Alli was nabbed during a Police intelligence-led operation on Wednesday at the Number 45 Village Public Road, Berbice. His car was stopped and searched. Cops found 257 lbs of marijuana, with an estimated street value of approximately $35M, in his vehicle.
