Star swimmer, Aleka Persaud placed fourth in heat 1 of the Women’s 100m freestyle event earlier this morning at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris, France and failed to qualify for the next round.

Persaud, 18, clocked 1:01.29 from
Lane 6 for the event staged at the Paris La Defense Arena.

Her personal best in the race is 59.06s. Paris marked the second Olympic Games for Persaud who is Guyana’s youngest ever Olympian.

Paige van der Westguizen (58.19s) of Zimbabwe, Tilly Collymore (58.84s) of Grenada and Botswana’s Maxine Egner (58.98s) were the other starters in the heat.

Ace swimmer, Raekwon Noel and Table tennis standout, Chelsea Edghill’s campaign at the Games also ended in their first events on opening day.

Guyana’s medal hopes now rest on the shoulders of sprinters Aliyah Abrams (women’s 400m) and Emanuel Archibald (men’s 100m).

Archibald competes on Saturday while Abrams springs into action on Monday.
