As the National Cleanup Exercise approaches, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, called on the Private Sector Commission (PSC), the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and the Chinese Association of Guyana to urge its members to dispose of their commercial waste responsibly.

The minister who also serves as the Chairman of the National Enhancement Committee, bemoaned the unsightly state of sections of Georgetown and other parts of the country that have virtually become unregulated garbage sites. “We do as much as we can as a government, but at the end of the day everybody has to have a collective approach to achieve behavioural change,” Minister Indar noted.

The PSC reiterated its support for the cleanup exercise, as well as calls for increased enforcement and behavioural change.

An extensive public relations campaign to educate the public about littering and its harmful effects on the environment will soon be launched.

City Councillors Don Singh and Steven Jacobs; Solid Waste Director Walter Narine; Chairman of the GCCI, Kester Hutson, as well as representatives from the GMSA and the Chinese Association of Guyana, also attended the meeting.
