The master plan for the $6 billion homestead programme along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway has been completed, as announced by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Monday.

The disclosure, made via the President’s official social media page, revealed that the master plan was presented during a meeting with several government ministers, technical officials, and representatives from the banking sector.

President Ali first introduced this innovative initiative during a media conference in June. The programme, which integrates housing with agriculture, will see 500 homes built on approximately 100 acres of land at Yarrowkabra. Each home will be equipped with agricultural facilities and powered by solar energy, creating a self-sustaining environment for residents.

During the opening of the International Building Expo 2024, President Ali stated that the government aims to complete this project within six months, involving the collaboration of multiple ministries.

“For the first time, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Survey, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Human Services will be working together to deliver this project,” he said.

The plan features each plot with coconut or breadfruit trees in the front yard and a 20 x 40 shade house at the rear of the house. These shade houses, equipped with advanced agricultural technology, will be designed to enhance food production and provide a stable income for families.

By incorporating sustainable agriculture, the programme aims to offer single mothers a pathway out of poverty, transitioning them into middle-income families.

The administration continues to emphasize its commitment to improving living conditions and enhancing the economic stability and quality of life for thousands of families, particularly by setting standards for low-income housing.
