The Government of Guyana, through the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs, is set to host an “International Arbitration in Practice” workshop from August 26 to 29, 2025 in Georgetown.
This workshop, conducted in collaboration with the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP) and supported by the ROLE UK Programme and UKAid, represents the second phase of a capacity-building initiative that began in 2023. It aims to further develop the expertise of Guyanese lawyers in international arbitration, especially in light of the new Arbitration Act of 2024.
A total of 35 participants from key institutions are expected to attend the workshop, which will feature practical sessions addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the new law. Invited participants include representatives from the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, the Ministry of Housing, the Arbitration Unit, the Maritime Administration Department, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, and the Bar Associations.
Five experts from the International Senior Lawyers Project, affiliated with the international law firms Winston & Strawn and Chaffetz Lindsay, will lead the in-person sessions. These training sessions are designed to equip state counsel and other legal professionals with the skills to interpret, implement, and apply arbitration law effectively, thus ensuring that Guyana remains a secure and attractive destination for foreign investment. The workshop also aims to promote confidence in Guyana’s legal system by reinforcing the rule of law and aligning with the country’s public policy.
The training has received financial and technical backing from the Advocates for International Development’s Rule of Law Expertise UK (ROLE UK) Programme and UKAid, underlining the international support for strengthening Guyana’s legal framework in line with global arbitration standards.
