Prefacing his argument that the funds to be distributed by the PPP/C government rightfully belong to the people, Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton urged the electorate to accept the money but still vote the party out in next year’s election.
Norton made the call during the programme “Nation Watch”, hosted by People National Congress Reform (PNCR) Member, Mervyn Williams on Tuesday night.
Norton’s call comes days after President Dr Irfaan Ali disclosed several measures, including the issuance of a $200,000 cash transfer to each Guyanese household.
But Norton, the PNCR Leader, said that the move is a mere “election gimmick”. He added that the President’s move to introduce social measures is indicative of his government caving to political pressure brought on by the opposition. Moreover, with the next election around the corner, Norton said that the cash transfer in particular, can be seen an inducement. He said notwithstanding, the electorate must take the money but still vote the PPP/C party out of office.
“It is not their money, it’s the people’s money…This $200,000 – take the money!”
Norton was keen to add that the citizens must realize that the transfer will not take them entirely out of poverty, adding that only a good, transparent government – one which he hopes to lead – can eliminate hardships.
“While they are giving them a little tit here and a little tit there, take it! But be very, very clear: the PPP has no interest in your community. Only a change of government will allow you to deal with high cost of living and to deal with poverty,” Norton said.
