The government has announced plans to introduce a swine production programme in Karasabai, Region Nine, aimed at increasing disposable income and fostering economic growth in the community.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali revealed the initiative during an engagement with residents on Friday last, explaining that it forms part of a broader strategy to enhance financial literacy and encourage strategic investments.
“We want to work with you on financial literacy, showing how you can convert half of what you earn and triple it in the next year,” the President said, underscoring the programme’s potential to empower residents economically.
The swine production venture will be complemented by other agricultural investments, including egg production and the establishment of a small processing facility. The President noted that the government is committed to co-financing these projects, fostering public-private partnerships to ensure sustainability.
“For example, if you invest $35 million, the government will contribute an additional $10-$15 million. Together, that’s $50 million for a sustainable economic venture in this community, particularly benefiting young people,” President Ali explained.
To further stimulate investment, the President suggested that the one-off $100,000 cash grant for Guyanese aged 18 and older could be pooled into community-led agricultural projects. With approximately 700 eligible residents, this initiative could channel $70 million into Karasabai’s development.
President Ali also announced significant infrastructure upgrades for the region, including the construction of an all-weather road linking Regions Eight and Nine. This project will enhance connectivity, complementing the Linden to Lethem road currently under construction.
“This is real development, real progress,” he stated, emphasizing the transformative impact of these projects.
Since 2020, Karasabai has seen remarkable improvements, including new hospitals, health centres, schools, and enhanced transportation through tractors and all-terrain vehicles. The government has invested approximately $18.2 billion in roads across Region Nine, reflecting its commitment to parity between hinterland and coastal communities.
On Friday, the President also oversaw efforts to rebuild and restore infrastructure damaged by the windstorm on November 3, which destroyed 22 homes. Swift government intervention ensured that affected residents received support, and recovery efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy.
Joining the President during the engagement were Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Sonia Parag, and Regional Chairman Bryan Allicock.
President Ali reaffirmed the government’s dedication to empowering hinterland communities, stating, “This level of development is what the people of Karasabai deserve.”
