A tragic accident claimed the life of 78-year-old Sheik Hassan of Lot 69 Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, on Monday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 06:19hrs on the western carriageway of Peters Hall Public Road, near the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The accident involved Motor Lorry #GAC 6742, driven by Arif Hussain, a 32-year-old resident of Annandale. According to reports, the lorry was traveling north along Peters Hall Public Road as police officers were directing traffic in the area.
While traffic was being allowed to proceed, Hassan attempted to cross the road from west to east in front of the lorry. Unfortunately, the lorry struck the pedestrian, causing him to fall onto the road. Tragically, the lorry then rolled over Hassan, crushing his head.
Emergency Medical Technicians, led by K. Boyce, arrived on the scene shortly after being summoned. After assessing the situation, Hassan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
