The bustling Christmas Village along Main Street, Georgetown, gained added significance this year with the unveiling of the first-ever One Guyana Supermarket. This platform is dedicated to promoting local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and showcasing Guyanese agricultural produce.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali officially opened the festive event on Monday, describing Guyana’s Christmas celebrations as uniquely vibrant, colourful, and cheerful compared to the rest of the world.

Speaking to attendees, President Ali emphasized the need for reflection during the season, drawing attention to the struggles of children and women in conflict-affected regions such as Palestine and Ukraine.

“As a nation, we must continue to do our part to propagate peace wherever it is needed and support every effort that will bring about a peaceful world and society,” the president urged.

The One Guyana Supermarket serves as a hub for SMEs to display and sell locally produced goods. President Ali commended the Ministry of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce for spearheading the initiative, encouraging Guyanese to embrace their culture and talents during the festive season.

“This Christmas, let us celebrate who we are by utilising our local produce, food, culture, and talent. Let us make this season a true celebration of the vibrant Guyanese identity,” President Ali said.

President Ali also used the occasion to spotlight achievements in the tourism sector, including the addition of over 200,000 airline seats to meet growing demand. Caribbean Airlines, in particular, has increased flights to accommodate visitors eager to experience Guyana’s holiday charm.

Looking to 2025, President Ali announced an expanded tourism calendar designed to draw even more visitors and stimulate local economic activity. “Next year will be a year of immense energy and transformation, where our tourism jet will truly take off,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to national prosperity.

The president revealed plans for a grand Old Year’s Night celebration to cap off the season, featuring the largest family party on Main Street hosted by the military, police, fire service, and prison service. This event is part of the government’s broader efforts to foster unity and celebrate Guyanese culture under the banner of One Guyana.

The launch event featured captivating local performances, including songs, poems, and dances. Several members of Cabinet attended, including Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Oneidge Walrond and Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information.

The Christmas Village, now an annual tradition, continues to be a hallmark of the holiday season, bringing together Guyanese from all walks of life to celebrate the country’s rich culture and shared identity.
