As Guyana approaches the 2025 General and Regional Elections cycle, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has expressed confidence in his party’s ability to secure an overwhelming victory.
During the second episode of In the Seat, aired on Saturday night, President Ali reflected on past political events, the government’s achievements, and their future prospects.
Looking back at the 2018 no-confidence motion against the then APNU+AFC government, Ali noted that elections, which were constitutionally due within three months of the motion being passed in December 2018, were delayed until March 2020. Even then, he said it took five months of recounts before the elected People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) was sworn into office.
“For us we are focused on winning the elections, we are focused on ensuring that our systems are in place, focused to ensure that the laws are adhered to and focused to ensure that the constitutional provisions are adhered to,” President Ali said.
He continued, “Once the laws and constitutional provisions are adhered to, we are sure that with the type of works we have done over the last four plus years with the type of investments we have made in the communities and in the lives of Guyanese we are very confident that the Guyanese are going to support us overwhelmingly in the next elections.”
Moreover, President Ali attributed his administration’s accomplishments to the commitments made in their 2020 election manifesto, reporting significant progress on promises made to the electorate.
“I’m very pleased to report that we have almost completed our manifesto, every single commitment we made in the manifesto has been realized and we are now looking at bonus achievements,” the President said.
He emphasized investments in key areas such as physical infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and technology. He also highlighted initiatives to enhance human capital, including the establishment of Guyana’s first state-of-the-art oil and gas training facility at Port Mourant, Berbice, Region Six, the Nearshore programme with Canada, hospitality training and no more tuition fees at the University of Guyana.
Notably, it was reported that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) should have all systems in place by August 2025 to facilitate the next General and Regional Elections. The current administration was sworn in on August 2, 2020.
