President Dr. Irfaan Ali has revealed that over $54 billion has been spent on constructing and rehabilitating schools across Guyana in the past four years.
Speaking during a recent Facebook broadcast from State House, the President highlighted his government’s commitment to transforming education, noting that major investments have been made at every level.
He said that since 2020, 34 schools have been built or expanded, while 350 nursery schools, 440 primary schools, and 115 secondary schools have undergone maintenance.
“More persons have access to secondary schools today, and this came as a result of the more than $54 billion of investment we made in the last four years to construct and rehabilitate schools, improve infrastructure, and expand infrastructure in some instances,” Ali stated.
The President also underscored his administration’s focus on teacher training and increasing access to tertiary education. At the University of Guyana, tuition is now free, starting this semester.
Additionally, he noted that of the nearly 30,000 scholarships awarded under the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) programme, more than 70% went to women—surpassing the initial target of 20,000 scholarships.
Beyond education, Ali reaffirmed his government’s broader commitment to empowering citizens through investments in healthcare, agriculture, and other key sectors.
