Four young men lost their lives in three separate road accidents on Sunday last, sending shockwaves across the county. Speeding and loss of control appear to be contributing factors in each case.
Timehri Collision Claims One Life
The first fatal accident occurred early Sunday morning at approximately 6:30 hrs on the public road at Timehri, East Bank Demerara. It involved motor car PAG 9078, driven by 25-year-old Suresh Singh of Hill Foot, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and motor lorry, GAD 8492, driven by 45-year-old Terry Duff, a Trinidadian national.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Singh was heading south at a high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, veering into the path of the lorry traveling in the opposite direction. The impact resulted in extensive damage to both vehicles, and Singh sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Center by public-spirited citizens but was pronounced dead.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the truck driver showed no trace of alcohol. He was served a Notice of Intended Prosecution and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Den Amstel Crash Kills Motorcyclist, Brother Hospitalized
Later that night, at around 21:07 hrs, a second fatal accident occurred on the Den Amstel public road, West Coast Demerara. The crash involved motor car, PAJ 7560, owned by Essential Supplies Inc. and driven by 26-year-old Gavin Samier Bacchus of Patentia Housing Scheme, and an unregistered motorcycle, JSP 4, operated by 18-year-old Finidy Miggins of Lot 31 Den Amstel, with his 19-year-old brother, Terron Miggins, as a pillion rider.
Reports indicate that the motorcycle was speeding east along the northern side of the road and attempted to overtake another vehicle when it veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with Bacchus’s car. Both riders were flung from the motorcycle, sustaining serious injuries.
They were transported to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where Finidy Miggins succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. Terron Miggins was later transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he remains admitted with broken legs. The body of the deceased has been taken to the Ezekiel Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Land of Canaan Crash Leaves Two Dead
The third fatal accident occurred at approximately 23:00 hrs on the Land of Canaan public road, East Bank Demerara, claiming the lives of 22-year-old Ronaldo Gordon and 23-year-old Joel Sutherland, both of Timehri North.
Investigations reveal that Gordon, who was driving motor car, PAD 7677, north along the western drive lane at a high speed, lost control of the vehicle, which swerved into the eastern lane and crashed into a concrete bridge rail. The impact caused the car to be extensively damaged, and both Gordon and Sutherland, who was seated in the front passenger seat, were thrown from the vehicle.
Passersby assisted in transporting the injured men to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where they were both pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have been taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.
