-with them, we will be even more invincible -General Sec.- Dr Bharrat Jagdeo
While he acknowledged that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has a strong footing in Indigenous and Indo-Guyanese communities, General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo said more needs to be done to win the hearts of Afro-Guyanese. The revered party leader noted that this will entail dispelling racist rumours being spread by the opposition.
During his tribute on Sunday at Babu Japan, where supporters to celebrated the life and legacy of former President, the late Dr Cheddi Jagan, Jagdeo said it often seems as though the party is fighting against an invisible enemy.
“You don’t see the opposition as prevalent as they were before, but do not be deluded. If you grow arrogant and if you don’t put in the hard work, we can have surprises,” said the official, adding, “They are invisible; they’re not doing much, but quietly, they continue to spread the racist messages that they’ve grown accustomed to using in campaigning.”
Jagdeo said opposition members are going into communities to not only spread their vile messages but to also shame Afro-Guyanese who have consciously seen his party as the only one that can guarantee a sustainable future. “They’re trying to shame them by calling them names to keep them away from us because they know once we grow stronger in the Afro-Guyanese communities in this country, the PPP becomes even more invincible than we are today,” said Jagdeo.
The General Secretary said the fight against “the invisible enemy” was happening since Jagan’s era. Jagdeo said the enemy’s playbook was evident. Jagdeo recalled that since Jagan’s time, the opposition would go to Afro-Guyanese communities and say everything is being done in Indo-Guyanese communities, but not in theirs. Decades later, the tune is still the same, said Jagdeo.
He noted that elections are not won by lofty speeches but hard work to dispel the rumors that the PPP is a racist party. Jagdeo committed that his party will do what it takes to set the record straight, that is, within the PPP, there is zero tolerance for racism.
