Please see statement from the AFC:
The Alliance For Change notes with growing concern acts of intimidation being carried out by agents of the governing PPP. This is extremely troubling ahead of General and Regional Elections due later this year.
The AFC reminds all Guyanese, especially members and supporters of the PPP that, the Right to Assembly is provided for in the Constitution. It is an offence to prevent any individual from enjoying such rights.
The fact that there has been no condemnation or rebuke of such behaviour by the leaders of the PPP is a clear indication that these subversive actions are not only sanctioned by the hierarchy of the PPP but, are organised and carried out at their bidding and with their full approval and support.
Preventing citizens from exercising their constitutional rights, disrupting peaceful assembly and general rowdy behaviour by PPP activists does not harbour well for the upcoming elections climate. It is likley that we will see more of this in the months ahead. These acts are designed to intimidate those who do not support the PPP but moreso, PPP traditional supporters looking for change and a better form of governance.
The AFC notes the conspicuous absence of ranks of the Police Force whose duty it is to maintain peace and good order. We expect the Police to carry out its duties professionally. We call on the Commissioner to ensure all divisions protect the rights of citizens to Assembly. Failure to do so is to fail to protect the rights of citizens whom the Police is obligated and sworn to Protect and Serve.
